Sr Accountant, Tax Credits & Incentives

Overall Job Summary

This role supports the Company’s tax credits, incentives, and operational tax planning initiatives across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. The role partners closely with Finance, Real Estate, Payroll, Supply Chain, HR, and operational business teams to identify, evaluate, document, and support tax credit and incentive opportunities that align with the Company’s strategic growth objectives.

Responsibilities include administration of tax credit and incentive programs, support for property tax abatements and economic development agreements, tax compliance and reporting activities, operational analysis, and participation in process improvement and automation initiatives. This role also supports ongoing monitoring of legislative developments and assists with identifying opportunities to optimize tax savings and operational efficiency. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

  • Support the administration and compliance of federal, state, and local tax credit and incentive programs, including tracking, documentation, reporting, and filing requirements.
  • Partner with Finance, Real Estate, Payroll, HR, Supply Chain, and operational business teams to identify and evaluate tax credit and incentive opportunities related to store growth, hiring initiatives, capital investments, and economic development projects.
  • Coordinate with third-party consultants and service providers to support tax credit studies, incentive applications, abatements, and compliance requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain supporting schedules, reconciliations, and documentation related to tax credits, abatements, grants, and incentive programs.
  • Review and analyze monthly income statement and balance sheet activity related to tax credit, incentive, and operational tax accounts to identify trends, variances, and savings opportunities.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities related to tax credits, incentives, and property tax savings initiatives.
  • Monitor tax abatements and incentive agreements to ensure compliance with program requirements and realization of anticipated savings.
  • Research federal, state, and local legislative developments related to tax credits, incentives, and economic development programs and assist in evaluating impacts to Company operations.
  • Support operational tax planning initiatives by analyzing business activities and identifying opportunities for process improvements and tax optimization strategies.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests, tax notices, and information requests related to tax credits, incentives, and property tax matters.
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls, policies, procedures, and process documentation related to tax credit and incentive administration.
  • Support automation, reporting enhancement, and tax technology initiatives to improve efficiency, data accuracy, and operational effectiveness.Research and respond to inquiries from internal business partners, stores, distribution centers, and operational teams regarding tax credit and incentive matters. 

Required Qualifications

Experience: 5+ years of related tax, accounting, finance, or operational analysis experience required. Experience supporting tax credits, incentives, property tax, economic development programs, or multi-location retail operations preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.  Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.

Professional Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred

Preferred knowledge, skills or abilities

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Ability to process, reconcile, and analyze electronic data.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, including advanced skills in Excel.
  • Experience with Systems, Applications, and Product (SAP) and Business Objects data management software, and OneSource Property Tax is preferred.
  • Ability to research, audit, and analyze.
  • Ability to interact and partner with professionals in various functional areas to resolve complex tax issues throughout Tractor Supply Company.
  • Ability to represent Tractor Supply Company with external auditors and consultants.
